PROMOTING BRITISH VALUES AT HARLANDS PRIMARY SCHOOL

The DfE have reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

At Harlands Primary School, we promote British values through SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) education to ensure our children develop a strong sense of social and moral responsibility which will prepare them for life in modern Britain.

Democracy and The Rule of Law

Democracy underpins school life.

We value pupil voice.  Through School Council meetings, circle time, pupil questionnaires and class worry boxes we invite the children to share their learning, their concerns and ideas for making the school even better. House Captains and School Councillors are elected by the pupils. Our school Behaviour Policy rewards children for taking responsibility and making sensible choices.

They discuss and understand the need for consequences and that individual behaviour has an impact upon others.

The school sanctions systems encourage reflection and thinking about the impact of their choices. We use SEAL resources to help promote SMSC during PSHE lessons and in Collective Worship and Assemblies, where children learn about the importance of having rules and how these relate to laws.
Children are taught the reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when the laws are broken. Visits from authorities such as the community police and fire officers are regular parts of our calendar and help reinforce this message.

Individual Liberty

Within school, children are encouraged to be independent and make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment to do so.

During PSHE, E-Safety lessons and assemblies, children are taught about how to keep themselves safe whilst exercising personal rights and freedoms. Safeguarding is embedded in every aspect of school life.

Mutual Respect

Our school ethos and Behaviour Policy are based upon our core values, including mutual trust, friendship, forgiveness and compassion.

Pupils are involved in discussions and assemblies to develop their understanding of respect. Adults model respect with one another and with the children in how we speak and treat one another. School assemblies include a focus on respect each term.

Tolerance of those of Different Faith and Beliefs

The school is a diverse community and we embrace these differences as strength.

Assemblies and discussions involving prejudices and prejudice-based bullying are supported by learning in RE and PSHE. We teach understanding of the beliefs of other faiths in RE lessons, and take part in multi-faith trips and activities, eg. Year 6 visit to the Mosque in Haywards Heath. Members of different faiths and religions are encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning within classes and the school.
