Safeguarding

Safeguarding and Promoting the welfare of children is defined as:

  • Protecting children from maltreatment
  • Preventing impairment of health or development
  • Ensuring children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care
  • Taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes
(Keeping Children Safe in Education, September 2019)

At Harlands Primary School we aim “to provide our children with a safe and well managed environment in which they feel secure.”

As professionals we care for the child not just as a learner, but also as an individual who has a family context and emotional, social and physical needs.  To enable the child to develop as we would wish, we should respond on behalf of that child to any problems - learning difficulties, bullying, family problems or abuse - as effectively as possible.

It is the responsibility of all staff to safeguard children and be aware of their responsibilities in identifying and reporting possible cases of abuse. As a school we recognise that safeguarding against radicalisation is no different from safeguarding against any other vulnerability.  On 1 July 2015 the Prevent duty (section 26) of The Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 came into force.  This duty places the responsibility on local authorities to have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism.  As part of our commitment to safeguarding and child protection, we fully support the government's Prevent Strategy.

Any person, whether staff, parents or governors will undergo relevant DBS checks, which can be arranged by contacting the School Office
